The International Energy Agency expects total global demand for fossil fuels to fall from 2050

The world's total demand for fossil fuels will peak and level off in the 2030s and gradually decline from 2050, according to the world Energy Outlook 2021 released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris.

The report predicts:

Global gas demand is set to rise to about 4.5 trillion cubic meters in 2030 and 5.1 trillion cubic meters in 2050.

Global oil demand is expected to stabilize at 104 million barrels a day in the mid-2030s before beginning to decline slightly by 2050.

Global coal demand will rise slightly by 2025 and then slowly decline, with global coal demand in 2050 set to be about 25% lower than in 2020.

Total global co2 emissions in 2050 will be 2 gigatonnes (2 billion tons) lower than projected for 2020.

Nonetheless, to meet the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5C by the end of the century, the IEA is calling on countries to further promote clean electrification, focus on energy efficiency and boost clean energy innovation.
